Laws On Taking PM Coins Out Of USA?
I live out of the USA, and have done so for more than a decade. I've been buying silver (and gold) for a couple of years and have it stored with a relative. I'm considering coming back to the USA in December and taking my silver coins out. I'm not sure how much silver I have exactly, but it's between 1000-2000 oz, mostly in the form of 90% silver (including a bag of $500 face Walker Halves) and some ASE's, including 2 collectors sets of 1996-2006 MS-69 proof sets (slabbed). A little palladium as well. The gold was taken with me the last couple trips I made, carried in the form of several tubes of Krug's.
I had no trouble taking the Krug's out. No one so much as batted an eye. Can anyone tell me what the law would be about taking out 60 lbs+ of silver out of the USA? I don't think I'm coming back for a LONG time. Anyone up on the law about this? |
Re: Laws On Taking PM Coins Out Of USA?
I'm no lawyer, but I remember when I've travelled overseas they require you to declare if you are carrying over $10,000 in cash or "equivalent" (something to that effect). While they say it's legal to transport any amount, I'm always nervous when they still make you declare something, even though there is no law against it. I don't know if this applies to PMs, but I would assume so.
I have read stories about people not declaring it, and when found out the money is confiscated because it's assumed it's "drug proceeds" or "money laundering". Good luck getting it back at that point. HTH. Edit: Nevermind. |

According to US law, here's the form you need to give to US Customs on your way out of the country if carrying more than $10,000:
